Cornell Microbial Food Safety and Quality Lab

Focuses on microbial food safety and quality concerns associated with fruit and vegetable products, sanitation during fruit and vegetable production and beverage plant sanitation. The Microbial Food Safety and Quality Lab works closely with other researchers, government regulators, extension agents, food processors, food producers, distributors, retailers and consumers to provide the following services for a fee. Please complete the appropriate form below and send samples along with a copy of the form to the attention of Ann Vegdahl, Cornell University, 128 Food Research Lab, 665 W North Street, Geneva, NY 14456.   An invoice will be sent to you at the completion of your products testing.

  • Shelf-life Study
    • $600 includes a 30-minute consultation, 4 testing points (day 0, 2 times during storage, and final storage day) for aerobic microorganisms and yeast & molds counts
  • Accelerated Shelf-life Study
    • $600 includes a 30-minute consultation, 4 testing points (day 0, 2 times during storage, and final storage day) for aerobic microorganisms and yeast & molds counts
  • Challenge Studies
    • $2,300 includes a 30-minute consultation, challenge study for E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, or Bacillus cereus
  • Microbial Analysis
    • $25 includes tier 1 lab tests (aerobic microorganisms, psychrotrophs, or yeasts & molds) one time test per product
    • $35 includes tier 2 lab tests (lactic acid bacteria, generic E. coli, or coliforms) one time test per product
    • $60 includes tier 3 lab tests (presumptive pathogen (STEC, Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, OR Bacillus cereus))
  • Revalidation/validation of UV Tubes
    • $190 includes UV tube validation/revalidation
