High Risk Populations

During a wildfire smoke emergency, it is important to know which populations of people might experience the greatest risks and challenges, and to be in a position to provide information and resources to help reduce health emergencies.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has published a list of populations that are at a higher risk of adverse health effects from wildfire smoke, including those with asthma or respiratory diseases, those with cardiovascular disease, children, pregnant people, older adults, those who work outdoors, and those of lower socio-economic status (see Table).

If you live with, work with, or care about someone who is at higher risk during a wildfire smoke emergency, learn about what you can watch for, and what you can do via the EPA website.
