New York State 4-H, June 27-29, 2023, Cornell Univ.

The three-day workshop “Story, Design, Action” focuses on careers paths in Humanities, Global Development, Hospitality, and Information Sciences, showcasing projects by Cornell undergraduates working in StudioLab design teams.  Through demos and hands-on exercises, youth from across New York State explore different programs and quads, collecting images and information for their own path-breaking performances of worldmaking.

DESIGN PROJECT: CAREER PATHS IN WORLDMAKING

FROM WHAT IS? TO WHAT COULD BE?

TUESDAY: COSMOGRAM : WHAT IS?

BEGIN by tuning in your WHY: What are your interests & passions, what worlds spark you?
Create your cosmogram: draw a circle with 4 quadrants with 1-2 memories or passions in each from School, Family, Community/History, and Pop Culture. Draw images, jot down key words. Go wide, not narrow. Look for patterns and flashes as you explore paths. Make notes, sketches, photos. Begin thinking about WhyWhatHow structure.

WEDNESDAY: SPARKLINE : CAREER PATHS

In the MIDDLE, explore programs on other Quads: WHAT career paths spark your interests?
Continue researching by visiting programs in other Colleges across campus. Make more notes, etc. at each site. Look for patterns of divergence and convergence, expanding and focusing interests. Start reflecting on the emerging set of futures worlds within your WhyWhatHow structure. Begin selecting images and insights and also outlining or storyboarding paths and worlds within your sparkline.

THURSDAY: PECHAKUCHA: WHAT COULD BE?

END by making a 2-min (6×20) presentation: HOW can paths help you make those worlds?
Working in Canva, Google Slides, or another platform, compose 6 slides with images, along with a script of 2-3 sentences for each slide. Use cosmogram and sparkline to report your interests (Why), research (What), and next steps (How). Practice your mini-PechaKucha with your team: hone script, images, and performance as needed. Present paths and worlds to show everyone What Could Be.
