Applying compost and other organic materials to farm fields is an age-old practice, but recent growing public awareness of the importance of recycling organic waste and building healthy soil has translated into increased use of compost and other soil amendments.

  • Mark Hutchinson, Extension Educator at the University of Maine, will discuss materials for composting, compost methods, quality of finished compost, and using compost at the farm scale.
  • Olga Vargas, Amy Langner, and Liz Camps, USDA-NRCS, will present on identifying soils that could benefit from soil carbon amendments, the new soil carbon amendment standard approved for NYS, as well as cost-share programs that encourage the application of compost and other organic materials.

Contact Sarah Osborn at 631-591-2315 or so348@cornell.edu, with questions.
