Applying compost and other organic materials to farm fields is an age-old practice, but recent growing public awareness of the importance of recycling organic waste and building healthy soil has translated into increased use of compost and other soil amendments.
- Mark Hutchinson, Extension Educator at the University of Maine, will discuss materials for composting, compost methods, quality of finished compost, and using compost at the farm scale.
- Olga Vargas, Amy Langner, and Liz Camps, USDA-NRCS, will present on identifying soils that could benefit from soil carbon amendments, the new soil carbon amendment standard approved for NYS, as well as cost-share programs that encourage the application of compost and other organic materials.
