Extension updates from Plant Breeding & Genetics (Margaret Smith)
New hiring:
- Global Vegetable Improvement faculty position (60% research: 40% extension): Plant Breeding and Genetics section concluded the interview process; offer has been made to the top candidate and negotiations are going on. This will be the largest extension FTE of any of Plant Breeding and Genetics faculty!
- Grapevine breeding position (60% research: 40% extension): Horticulture section had interviewed four strong candidates, and top two candidates have been identified. The position will be based in Geneva, NY at the AgriTech campus.
- Position description for a vegetable pathologist to address the needs of vegetable growers on Long Island is being developed.
Events:
- The Seed Growers Field Day: The Seed Growers Field Day will be held on Friday 30 June from 9-noon (registration opens at 8:30) at the Foundation Seed Barn on Rt. 366 (just east of the Guterman complex on the edge of campus). Small grains, forage, and cover crop breeding efforts and variety testing will be highlighted. Field day will also honor and celebrate Gary Bergstrom, a regular contributor to this field day, and June 30 will be his last official workday before retiring.

Extension updates from Long Island Horticultural Research and Extension Center (Margery Daughtrey)
- Executive Leadership Conference for CCE Executive Directors on Long Island: Cornell Cooperative Extension recently held its Executive Leadership Conference for CCE Executive Directors on Long Island, during which CCE-Suffolk hosted a 12 June tour of the extension and research at Cornell’s Long Island Horticultural Research & Extension Center as well as a barbecue in the garden. Attendees learned about programs in agricultural stewardship, entomology, floriculture, ornamentals pathology, landscape and nursery horticulture, plant breeding, viticulture and weed science conducted at the Center in Riverhead, NY, where a great deal of collaboration takes place among CCE-Suffolk and Cornell University staff.

We have been organizing another amazing New York Soil Health and Climate Resiliency Field Day series this year across NY and for different commodities. Two have already happened, but there are six left in the field day series this summer.
