April 2023: Teaching updates

As we wrap up the Spring 2023 semester and look ahead to Fall 2023, there are several important pieces of information I want to share with you about teaching:

  1. There is still time to order course evaluations. You have to order your own evals, so if you did not submit a request for an evaluation, students will not be able to submit feedback. Evals from SP23 will be processed in June and posted online after grade rosters are locked by the registrar: http://courseeval.cals.cornell.edu/EvalPublic.aspx. If you’re looking for an evaluation and it’s not here, that means an evaluation wasn’t ordered for that course in that semester.
  2. Grade rosters for Spring 2023 classes will be built by the university registrar very soon. Please take a moment now to check your class rosters, especially for graduate research. If you have any concerns—see names you don’t recognize, notice someone’s name is missing, or the grade option selected by students is wrong—get in touch with me as soon as possible. Once grade rosters are built, they cannot be modified for any reason, so it’s critical to catch issues beforehand.
  3. Final grades are due by 8AM on Tuesday, May 30.
  4. Remember to check in Faculty Center (facultycenter.cornell.edu) for your graduate students enrolled in your research or individual study sections. They will need a grade, too.
  5. The FA23 class roster, https://classes.cornell.edu/browse/roster/FA23, went live last Friday. Please take a moment to check your course(s) listings and let me know about any concerns. Remember that the university registrar shifted many class times, especially those on Tuesday-Thursday in late-morning to mid-afternoon slots. Check to make sure you know your “new” official class time! Thanks to those of you who have already reached out with questions or concerns.
  6. PLSCI 8900 and PLSCI 9900: We are working to improve the enrollment process and grading protocol for these graduate-level (MS and PhD) research courses, starting in FA23. To minimize the chaos of moving enrolled students from one section to another while we hash out the last details, we have locked ALL sections of PLSCI 8900 and PLSCI 9900 during pre-enrollment for continuing students. But we hope to have positive news to share by July, when new students enroll, and we will provide detailed instructions before then on how enrollment in these courses will work across all grad fields in SIPS. In the meantime, faculty: please tell your grad students that they should expect to enroll in PLSCI 8900 or PLSCI 9900 in August when add/drop opens for them.
  7. Pre-enrollment for FA23 courses begins this Wednesday, April 26 (dates and times by academic status are below).
