SIPS grad students reap awards at ASA-CSSA-SSSA meeting

Congratulations to SIPS recipients of awards at the recent meeting of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America. The 2022 ASA-CSSA-SSSA International Annual Meeting was held in Baltimore MD November 6-9 with the theme “Communication and Public Engagement for Healthy People and a Healthy Planet”.

Among the SIPS awardees is Zafer Bestas, graduate student in the program of Harold van Es, who received first place for his presentation “New Approach to Detect Nitrogen Status in Maize: Under – Canopy RGB Imaging” in the the ASA session on sensor-based nutrient management.

Urial Menalled, Jake Allen, and Annika Rowland placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, respectively, for their presentations in the ASA session on Organic Management Systems. All three are graduate students in the program of Matt Ryan and presented on topics related to weed management in no-till organic farming systems.  Adam Sharifi, an undergraduate Environment & Sustainability major working with Matt Ryan delivered a presentation as well.

Uriel Menalled was also awarded the Crop Science Graduate Student Scholarship in recognition of his contributions and achievements in the field. The award was presented the Awards Breakfast on November 9.
