Dr. Kelly Nygren

Dr. Kelly Nygren

Lead Staff Scientist Structural Materials Beamline - CHESS

Kelly Nygren is the lead staff scientist at the Structural Materials Beamline (SMB) at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS), combining her passion for understanding the performance of current and next-generation engineering alloys with applied problems. Kelly earned her BS in 2011 and PhD in 2016 from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in Materials Science and Engineering. In her graduate work, she examined deformation and fracture pathways of engineering alloys in extreme environments. Her postdoc at the University of Wisconsin Madison extended these studies into corrosion and radiation degradation of alloys. She joined the Cornell community as a CHESS postdoc seeking to bridge mechanistic understandings from electron microscopy with macroscopic models using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. In her current role, she continues to combine these complementary modalities to target fundamental mechanisms of deformation in polycrystalline alloys, especially under fatigue and extreme conditions.

Rajesh Bhaskaran is the Swanson Director of Engineering Simulation and senior lecturer in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University. His work seeks to promote the democratization of simulation through the effective integration of industry-standard simulation software into engineering education. He has helped introduce Ansys-based simulations into 17 Cornell engineering courses. Nearly 290,000 people from 173 countries have enrolled in his massive open online course on simulations at edx.org; this course was a finalist for the edX prize. He has developed two online Cornell certificates in finite-element analysis and computational fluid dynamics for working professionals to learn practical simulations. He has been awarded the Dennis G. Shepherd Prize for Excellence in Teaching by Cornell University. He holds a B. Tech degree from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from Iowa State University.

Dr. Peter Mancini

Dr. Peter Mancini

Research Staff at Institute for Defense Analyses

Dr. Peter Mancini received his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Maryland – College Park in 2017. His experimental research focused on characterizing aerodynamic flow phenomena in low-speed flapping wing flight. Transitioning to the Institute for Defense Analyses in 2018, he assumed the role of research staff member, providing analytical support to the Director, Operational Test and Evaluation. In this capacity, he oversees cyber threat testing across a breadth of mission-critical DoD systems, spanning tactical land vehicles, radar ground stations, satellite systems, and other DoD assets. Recently, he began leading a project leveraging smooth particle hydrodynamics to model the impacts of orbital debris on LEO satellites, with a focus on predicting the effects of increased debris on the surrounding space environment.

Ryan Fordham has been a materials engineer at Lithoz America for the past 3 years. Lithoz is a system provider of additive manufacturing equipment for high-performance ceramics with locations in Vienna Austria and Troy NY. Ryan graduated from Alfred University in the spring of 2019 with his bachelor’s in mechanical engineering. Following graduation, he worked briefly for Oak Ridge National Lab as a project engineer for the US ITER nuclear reactor project before returning to Alfred to continue his education. He graduated in the fall of 2021 with a masters in material science focused on additive manufacturing of ceramics. In his current role, Ryan focuses on application and material development studies which includes project planning/management, supporting lab operation and maintenance, data analysis, and reporting at the Troy NY office. In addition, he leads trainings for equipment customers, completes equipment installation and services, and represents the company at industry conferences and trade shows.
