Week 1

Start date: 6/13/22

Excuse the late post! There were some technical difficulties getting this blog up and running, but we’re here now to talk about the 4-H Development project through CCE. In our project, we are developing a viticulture and grape curriculum to spread to the youth of New York State. Thanks to Mingla Charoenmuang, my project leader, I was able to educate myself on food systems and the 4-H model of Positive Youth Development, so I can work to adapt a similar project in the works at Michigan State 4-H to the needs of New York 4-H.

New York’s viticulture industry is hidden behind the success of the apple, but steadily growing. Grapes are grown in more areas than just the Finger Lakes, Erie, and Long Island. Now, 53 out of the state’s 62 counties have vineyards. I spent this week scouring the internet for any information I could find pertaining to viticulture education and resources available to the counties. I used the CCE website and visited each county one by one, noting what I found and experts to contact.

We have an exciting trip coming up this week so stay tuned!
