The Gift of Time

The arrival is yet another story about lack of communication and the need for humans to feel threaten by the things they do not understand. In watching this movie, I realized that all is takes is for one person to stand up for the misunderstood in order for the world to really understand their purpose. After watching this movie, a question really stuck with me: If you could see your whole life from end to beginning, will you change things?

If I somehow was blessed with the gift of time from a bunch of visiting aliens, I would feel the need to change things if my end turned out to be bad. I feel that this kind of gift could be a blessing and a curse due to the fact that one could spend a lifetime changing things in their future that is not liked. In all, I thought this movie and event to be enjoyable.

B.C.C–Barn, Cow, Calf

Today, April 14, I was able to go the dairy barn. Although I have heard about the diary barn, I have never taken the time to go there. My time there was a very pleasant one. Through, the Cornell Teaching Dairy Barn, I learned some interesting facts about the way the cows at Cornell are feed and housed. For one thing, the metabolic process of the cows require a lot of energy. The energy used is about the same energy a human being uses to jog a long distance. Since their metabolic process requires at lot of energy, they need to eat a lot of food.

Another thing I learned, was that the sand beds are designed in a way that allows the cows to remain as clean as possible. One thing that add to my overall experience was seeing the baby calfs. I thought the calfs to be really adorable.

The Prison Run

The Barkley Marathon is a 60-100 miles course that was inspired by a prison break. Along the way, the runners are expected to pick up books they find while running the course. During the movie it was said that barely anyone finishes the course. I could not imagine why anyone would put themselves through such physical exhaustion to run a course designed after a prison break.

Upon further reflection, I realized that idea of not a lot of people finishing the race draws a lot of people’s attention. I believe that they are many people who want to join the list of the few who finished the course. Also, there are a lot of people who would like to run a course like this for fun.

In all I thought the movie was not as interesting as the other movies that I have seen.

The Resume: Self Representation at a Glance

In a pool of 1,000 applicants, the chances of securing the internship or job position boils down to five seconds. So, if that is the case, how does one stand out and truly give a representation of one’s work life, personality, and skills in under five seconds? The answer to figuring this out lies in the resume: A self-representation of one’s offerings.

To truly be a contender, one must make sure the basic structure of a resume is adhered to and the readability of the resume is maximized. To do this, basic components of a resume such as one’s contact information, objective, education, and leadership position are included. This must be done for one to be taken seriously in the job market. Doing this allows for the interviewer to keep reading past the two second mark. The one second mark would be for the interviewer to take in the resume and assess if the resume is worth the read.

To really stand out, one must have that one highlighted feature that allows them to stand out from the rest. It could be a really appealing objective statement, the design of the resume, or the experiences one has done.

I really believed this seminar to be wonderful in helping me redesign my resume and to further improve my resume.

The Fallacy of an Utopian Society Created Through Idealistic Notions

What Happened to Monday was a movie that depicted the wish of a nation to see another week during a time when the resources a society has are incapable of sustaining the rising population. The movie was introduced during a time in which each day in a nation’s history brought with it the struggle to survive. With each passing day, limited resources brought ensuing hunger, hopelessness, and despair. During such hard times, the people of a nation are willing to believe in an idea that brings with it the promise of a better tomorrow without stopping to process the realism and consequences of an idea grounded in utopianism. This movie showed how easily one can gain power through unshakable trust. The child allocation act [the creation of a one-child household through the elimination of siblings in society] was an example of mind control at its best. This policy survived for decades because the government fostered utopianism through secrecy and lies. By creating this illusion, the government got parents to willingly give up their children for elimination without doubting the falsehood of an idea. This movie showed the attainment of power and influence once people mindlessly believe in one’s ideals. This is applicable to society because there are many countries in which the government tries to do what is best for their people without caring for the emotional well-being of their citizens. In the movie, we saw a family’s struggle to stay together. Through the screen, their raw emotions, desperation, and fear could be felt. Their struggles open the eyes to how far a person is willing to go to protect the person that has their heartfelt emotions. This movie also touched on how when a person is in a space without judgment, they can carry-out the unthinkable. From what could be gathered, it takes immense courage to break down the walls of a perfectly crafted illusion during a time when people need hope to go on. In all, I thought this movie to be enjoyable and I would recommend for anyone to see the movie.

The Mysteries Hidden in Plain Sight

I have walked the arch of West Campus numerous times during my time at Cornell. During my walk, up the stairs and up the slope, I have never once noticed a door that opens to lead to a room in between the arch and Lyon hall. During my Spring 2018 semester, I have walked past the door in Lyon Hall that leads to this room and not once did it occur to me to open that door. To my surprise, after partaking in this activity, the door I never once thought to open leads to a war memorial room. Although this room was spooky and cold, it seems to hold pieces of history that seem to be forgotten. Only once during a blue moon are the secrets that are held in this room ever noticed. One piece of artifact that I found to be of interest was the copy of a letter from Lyndon B. Johnson. The letter was interesting to view and allowed me to catch a glance of the past. The room itself looked antique and very befitting for a war memorial room. Another interesting stop on this activity was the basement level of Rose House. It has never dawned on me to push the button to get to the basement level of Rose House. It was interesting to find out that once you reached the basement level, you cannot use the elevator to go back up Rose House from the basement level. In all, I thought this activity to be interesting. This activity helped me to realized that all the secrets of Cornell may be impossible to discover in four years. There might always be a mystery that one person might not know or discover during their time at Cornell.

Credibility, Hardwork, and Fairness

The strict regulations by the United States Anti-doping Agency are in place to bring integrity to the Olympics. I believe the Russian suspension for doping was fair because I believe that one should only be rewarded once they are triumphant in accomplishing their goals through honest hard work. The doping suspension placed on the Russian competitors and the consequences they faced shows that the guidelines enforced by the Anti-doping Agency is working. This further helps to bring credibility back to the Olympics because it shows that only honest hard work is valued in the Olympics. I believe that the doping incident is despicable and robs the other competitors of the validation of the hours spent training and mastering their craft.

The rescinding of the awards originally given to those who were doping might not have erased the past but it will help to erase the likelihood of this incident occurring again in the future. The doping incident also robs the fans of enjoying the Olympics. Many people are avid fans of many of the competitors who compete in the Olympics and many will be disappointed with knowing that their favorite competitor could have almost won gold. In all honesty, I agree with the consequences given to the Russian competitors. I am glad the consequences were served and many of the fans can go back to watching the Olympics that they love to watch. I thought the opening ceremony was beautiful and I am glad to know that fairness has been brought back to the Olympics.
