Looking to the Stars

On Friday, we walked to the observatory for a talk and to look through the telescope at the moon. I had never ventured that far on to North campus. I have to admit that I have never really thought about our role in the galaxy, as far as that I did not know we were in the Milky way. After the talk I have a better understanding of the solar system as one system, and space as a whole. The talk comforted me that the end of the world was not near and there is no reason to fear. My favorite part of the night ws looking through the telescope in the dome. It was trained on the moon and you could see the craters in the moon’s surface! I plan to go back one Friday night, hopefully when the sky is clearer than it was last Friday and look at the sky again. It was a great experience and I am glad that I got to know another part of Cornell.

  1. This is something I really want to do at some point before graduating from Cornell! It’s not only cool to take a look at the “planetary system” that we are just a small segment of, but it helps with a bit of perspective-taking. Can’t wait to do this too!

  2. Can’t wait to do this too! Same concern because we had to walk all the way to the North. I haven’t been there after Freshman year but I’m glad to hear that the observation worth it.

  3. For the people here who’ve been expressing interest in astronomy, ASTRO 1101 is a course here that gives a pretty good overview of basic astronomy while keeping things simple for those who don’t like math. I took it last semester, and it was a nice change of pace from some of my more challenging classes. As the original poster sort of mentioned, it gives you a wider perspective of the universe in a calming way.
