Hidden figures was so great! Taraji P hansen and all the other women in the movie played their roles so well. It’s a movie which sheds light on the issues of racism and sexism in america. The message really resonated with me because it’s something I relate to as a black female and immigrant in America. I loved how the three women broke boundaries and accomplished what had not been accomplished before. I loved that they had to fight to get what they wanted. It’s a movie that teaches about standing up for oneself and not caring about what other people think. I loved it!

INTRODUCTION TO THE ROSE SCHOLARS PROGRAM
The week I got accepted into the rose scholars program, we had a meeting and met with the other scholars in the program as well. It was a fun experience as we did some fun ice breakers. A pack of cards was passed around and everyone got to pick one. We all had to say a number of things about ourselves corresponding to the number on the card we picked at random. It was funny cause I picked a card with the number 6 and I realized thinking of 6 things about myself wasn’t exactly an easy task Lol! It was fun though and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the rose scholars program.

INTERACTING WITH LYNN TOMLINSON
This was another experience I was looking forward to because it is unlike what I’ve experienced before. It was great seeing a fellow Cornellian out in the world making it on a major scale. Lynn Tomlinson seemed very down to earth. She was so excited to answer questions asked by the audience and it was just a great experience overall. After our interaction, I searched up more of her work and I loved them. Definitely a huge fan!

MAJOR LIFE LESSON IN ZOOTOPIA!
Okay, first of all who would ever think that an animated movie could teach a person such an important life lesson! I thought Zootopia would be a random cartoon about animals in the jungle but I was very wrong Lol. This movie features a little female bunny who challenges the status quo and succeeds beyond expectation in a society where females and bunnies were considered weak, useless and at the bottom of the society. It incorporates the concepts of racism and prejudice in the most subtle way and teaches that anything is possible as long as one sets their mind to it. It was also hilarious as well and the theme song, I absolutely loved! Clearly, I really loved watching this movie and I’d recommend it to a lot of people.

Tamar El Said
This week I decided to watch the movie Tamar El Said as my rose scholar activity. It was quite an experience. The movie is shot in Egypt and is in Arabic. This was actually my first time watching a movie in Arabic. It was quite challenging at first, but as the movie went on, my ears adjusted to the new language and I began to really enjoy it. It was an okay movie overall.
BIAS AND ETHICS IN JOURNALISM
This week, I had the opportunity of being a part of a discussion about journalism. It was really fascinating because this isn’t a kind of discussion I would normally be engaged in since I really don’t know much about journalism. Truthfully, I attended the discussion because it was the only activity that fit my schedule this week and I didn’t expect to gain any much out of it. However, I was wrong! The discussion led by GRF Sam was so enlightening and interesting. Even though I knew almost nothing about journalism, I could understand and relate to everything discussed. What stood out to me was a question of bias and ethics in journalism and if journalism would really be possible and effective if bias didn’t exist.. Everyone gave great insights into this topic from multiple perspectives. I had a great experience in the end!

An awesome trip to the botanical garden
I had the opportunity of going to the botanical garden on Saturday and I have to say I had such an awesome time! Peter was our tour guide, and he was the first interesting thing about the trip to the garden. He was a professor here at Cornell for 46 years in the plant sciences department and is now spending his retirement years talking about the beauty of the garden to any interested in learning. One really interesting fact I learned is that the botanical garden was previously a farm that belonged to Ezra Cornell. Another cool fact is that it takes about $5 million to run it each year! I got to meet a few new people too. Overall, it was an awesome experience and if you haven’t visited the garden yet, you should totally take some time to, it’s right by Mann Library on the Ag Quad.
My First Week and Exposure to Entrepreneurship at Cornell
I applied to the rose scholars program because I often get so carried away with academic activities that I am never a part of other social activities on campus. I wasn’t so sure of what the Rose Scholar experience would be like but my first week being a rose Scholar exceeded my expectations and gave me what I’ve been looking for—an opportunity to have a balanced academic/social life. Out of about 7 different activities to choose from, I ended up going to the one which stuck out to me the most– a meeting with the director of Entrepreneurship at Cornell.
I am really happy that an event relating to entrepreneurship was incorporated into the program this week. I learned a whole lot about how to go about transforming an idea into a business and the facilities available to entrepreneurs on campus.
I look very forward to my subsequent weeks as a rose scholar. I have a feeling it’s going to be awesome!
Best,
