Let’s Party Like The Greeks

I go out and party every weekend. I am constantly trying to avoid real life running away to the closest frat party or kickback (a small get together with friends). Every weekend I overindulge with drinking often doing way more than I need to because I like the feeling of not being in control. Growing up partying was something only the white kids did and I was always jealous of the freedom they had. I grew up with very strict parents and had to hide everything. So when I came to college I fully got into the partying culture because it was version of freedom. The loud beats, the dark room,  and strangers all give me a sense of freedom that I didn’t have as a kid. Drinking is very much a weird part of college it’s something we do but never really think about till it get’s bad.

Frozen Water

I am not a fan of anything that has to do with water, even frozen water but with the help of my friends I was able to get on the ice and skate (or at least try). I would personally not try to skate again but if my friends are there with me I know I would be more willing to throw on skates. I am happy that this was an option for me because even though I was scared I am happy I went on the ice and even got to complete the whole rink.

Scrabble Should include AAVE

So, if you know me you know homie loves a good card game. So when Game Night was brought up I was ready, but there were no card games and I was forced to play scrabble. Scrabble is a weird game, honestly who was like you know whats fun, words. Anyways despite this bland casserole of a game I was ready to win. I was playing against Hameedah, my favorite frienemy and I was destined to win. But alasI forgot that I cannot spell and that most of the words I use are AAVE. Then this brought me to the realization that this game should have a AAVE version. Because in this day and age everyone speaks AAVE (despite the fact that they shouldn’t considering it was created for black people), I know that this version would revitalize the Scrabble industry. AAVE Scrabble would hit. But that will never get made because companies never think of their black consumers. Also I just know the commercials and billboards for this would be beyond racist.

The War On Drugs was a War On Minorities

Zootopia is a film about a cute little bunny trying to get respect in her field. Along the way she befriends a fox (her natural enemy) and saves the town. But despite all the child like wonder of the film it is a metaphor for the war on drugs. Just like how the big animals were drugged and portrayed to be dangerous, Ronald Reagan did that to minorities in America. The government brought drugs into minority communities to ruin them. And then with the War on Drugs it tried to blame minorities for these drugs. The war was a tactic to lock minorities up to fill up jails while ruining the black family dynamic. The War on Drugs has a left a wound on minority families that some are still trying to heal.

Fall into Autumn

One of my favorite colors is orange. It combines the energy of the color red with the happiness of of the color orange. Orange is a warm color that often reminds me of the beauty of the fall season. The warm energetic and happy characteristics of orange are traits I associate with good times. For this reason when I was given the option of painting whatever I want I chose to paint fall trees. Fall trees full of fall leaves, a harbinger of good times and better energy.

Ripley’s Believe it or Not

Tom is a peaceful it was till he was pushed by he cruel Dickie Green. Tom was doing nothing but confronting his tormenter, it was not until Dickie struck first that Tom decided to take action. But it was less of a decision than a reaction. Tom did not want to hurt him but he was also in danger and had to defend himself.  Tom is innocent of murder and more or so a victim of assault. Dickie for months treated him like he was the world just to rip the carpet out from under him. The emotional turmoil Tom went through plus the assault he faced make Tom innocent of murder. Believe it or not but that man is not guilty.

Humans….RE-lax

When WALLE one phrase that coming to mind was “humans…RE-lax.”. Why are humans so tragic to everything they come around. WALL-E paints a picture of a real possible for the world if humans keep going on the way we do.  In oceanography this year I learned that we are currently in the midst go our 6th extinction. This is due to over production and capitalism. Humans are doing the absolute most. But its not even humans like individuals, it is more like our government who refuse to acknowledge these changes for do anything about them. It is time the government acknowledges the climate changes and does something about them before WALL-E becomes or reality.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race

Playing with clay taught me the importance of planned execution. When I walked into Johnson I did not know what we were making, I assumed we were going to make something super artsy. I was a little disappointed when I heard we were making mugs because to me I thought I already know how to make those. I wanted to immediately get into the clay and start working, but that was not how things were going to go. We first sat down to a demonstration on how to form the base, the cup, and the handle. While watching the instructor I realized that I was going to go about my mug the wrong ways. Sometimes when we have work ahead of us we want to immediately jump in and get to work, we do this with the mindset of this is the best way to get things done.  But sometimes you have to sit back and take things slow. Not everything is a race, somethings are better done slow than quickly. I am glad that I took time with my mug instead of rushing it. It was a soothing activity that allowed me to relax while still keeping my mind active. It also mad me realize that I need to spend more time doing things that I enjoy. Just like the story of the Tortoise and the Hare speed does not always mean doing the best. Sometimes you need to slow down.

Dear Professor, Confessions Of Bad Emailer

Dea Professor,

I don’t know about you but no words scare me as much as those two right there. For me emailing a professor has always been a source of anxiety. I never want to seem needy and I never want to seem annoying. Despite the fact that I am their student there is always an underlying level of unease with every message. I was always the type to start with a “hi”, forgetting to mention the professors name, and never even adding my own name to the email. But now from the knowledge of the seminar I have been able to garner more confidence when it comes to emailing my professors. By following the simple steps of being concise, being respectful, and using spell check, I am able to address my professors properly. The seminar also showed me the proper way to finesse. For example if I wanted to email a teacher to get into his class it would be best if I researched said professor before emailing them. This allows me to sound like I know what I am talking about and it also gives me a better chance of being let into the class. This seminar was very useful for me as a student.
