a night of games

That night was game night

many many games were in sight

however, we chose to play scrabble

darn, that game is a hassle

I was playing, but I was wishing I was far away

maybe in a castle, maybe somewhere astray

im really not a poet

so I will stop here

thank you for reading my terrible attempt

I hope you are content.

Anyways, game night was a nice get away. I met a few rose scholars and we played a game of scrabble. It was my first time playing that (even thought its such a popular game I know). Hopefully, Ill be able to set more time aside on a weekly basis to just relax and play games with my friends and peers. It was something new that I enjoyed!

Relived Childhoooddd

I saw the movie zootopia for the very first time in a very very long time. Many of the main motifs of this film parallel things I face in my own life. Like Judy, the rabbit police, I have had to overcome many obstacles and have been looked down upon on the basis of my physical characteristics. As a black girl, growing up I was always told I couldn’t do this or that. Regardless, I remained ambitious and sought out to do anything I put my heart to. This movie was very charming and reinforced the importance of kindness, teamwork, and grit. Never settle for less, and always reach for the stars!!! This movie was great and it made my heart swell, it reminded me of when I was younger, it was also very comedic. Judy, throughout the movie, was working her way up and ultimately cracked the ‘glass-ceiling’. She went beyond her limits and proved that she is a strong minded woman!

the dark side of passion

The movie The Talented Mr. Ripley opened my eyes to the danger that comes with passion and obsession. In the film, we saw Ripley’s obsession drive him to the extreme. He murdered his “best friend”, the person he was obsessed with (Dickey). It was crazy to see how insane he was acting and too see that he would take it that far. This obsession led him to take on a false identity, kill 2 of his companions, and lie to basically everyone he interacted with. Some might say he killed Dickey in self defense, but I do not believe that was the case. I think that his emotions took over him and led him to the extreme.

Last man on earth

Watching the movie Wall-E had me questioning what it would be like being the last person on earth. I think I would live a routine life like Wall-E did, and live freely and explore. Living in a world without people would be like living without imagination or creativity. Seeing evidence of past life would stress me out and make me reminisce on the past. Overall, the movie was very interesting and reminded me of my childhood. My sisters and I would sit around on weekends and watch movies together.

The artist in me

Its been about 2 years since I’ve played with clay and got to be artistic and creative. At first I guess I was a little hesitant to get my hands all messy and play around with the clay. However, it was a fun experience and I got to take my mind off of prelims and all those other stresses of the world. Also, it was my first time in the Johnson. I got to see that some of my fellow Rose scholars are super talented and creative. To be honest, the ‘artwork’ that I ended up making wasn’t all that, but it was a fun experience and something new for me!!! The uphill walk up to the museum was cold and lengthy, but when we got there I was excited to be there. Not only did we get to do some ceramics work, but our guide was nice enough to give us a mini tour of some of the sections of the museum. I definitely want to go back there and explore some more, also I would definitely want to try out sculpting again, and maybe use a bit more creativity so that I can create something memorable.

Stalking is OK…..sometimes

Today I learned about many aspects that make up a good email. Honestly, I thought that I was pretty well informed on how to conduct the perfect email, but after sitting through this seminar, I did learn many new things. First of all, I found out that it is ok to do a little bit of online stalking on the person you are trying to email. For example, going to a person’s LinkedIn page can tell you more about them, and the types of work or research that they have done in the past. This is especially helpful when writing to a possible employer. Having some background information on what they do is important and it shows them that you did your research. Inserting relevant information in the email is something that will get the employer intrigued and willing to reply.

Another important aspect of an email is the subject line. It is important that you put something in there instead of leaving it blank. It should be short and descriptive. Basically, you want to make the subject line something that a person would want to click, so that they can actually read your email instead of leaving it unopened.

During the seminar we talked about some common mistakes that could lead to an email never getting a reply. If you spell the recipients name incorrectly, they may get annoyed and refuse to respond. Also, a large amount of grammar mistakes represents a lack of effort, and this might also lead to no response. Lastly, if an email is to long and wordy, the recipient may not want to read through it, and thus they may never respond.

When writing emails it is good to be brief and to the point. Make sure to include something in the subject line, and to introduce yourself in the beginning of the email.

Lastly, if you do not get a response within a week or two, you should probably send a kind follow up message.

I learned a lot about formatting and devising emails from this seminar. I am now more cognizant of the way I speak to people online, and now will probably double (or even triple) check every single email I send!
