This entire movie is a musical masterpiece. The beginning is all smooth, more or less happy tunes. Makes you feel that everything is going to be great. Soon the music becomes more versatile, the movie brings out the anti-semitism in Poland and the inhuman treatment that Jews had to go through. The music becomes to get more gloomy and more violent with the gunshots and continued violence it moves from the lightness of the beginning to very heavy and emotional middle. Then there is pure silence as the protagonist is alone and scavenging for food. The silence is extremely long, longing the viewers for it to end. But then slowly you hear a single note, it feels fresh again and the long silence converts to a melody. This movie is a masterpiece in itself.

Past Cases => Current Case == Guilty
I gained a new way to look at law after watching this movie, court cases are nothing but a large proof or a computer program, the difference though is that a mistake and each proposition have a great burden associated with it and each and every mistake is extremely costly. What jury is trying to do is but to see if the proof or the program is correct. And the prosecutors are trying to raise proposition which brings out the truth with the original statement. In mathematics or computer science, one has perfect knowledge or at least enough to proceed forward, in the case of law this is not true. There are axioms which are the past judgments but as each theorem is unique each case is unique as well. In some sense, I find that the existence of this connection to be an important one to have to make sure we don’t go wrong with our decisions as a society as a whole.
And kid’s that’s how I met your mother, now go charge your batteries.
He is sad and alone with a cockroach as his only friend on a mission to box all garbage on the planet. Waiting for someone to swing dance with, one day meets his one true love. But she isn’t looking for love she is there for work, her mission is to save humanity. He hasn’t seen anybody like her so he follows her, literally going to any distance for her. He follows her to a new land, to challenges he never faced before. Once she finally acknowledges his, it might have been too late. Her duty is what all she thought about in the past, but he invoked in her something she had never felt before: love. He would do anything for her, even risk his life. In the end, he saves humanity but not for humanity’s sake, but for her to notice him.
Nightmare before the 25th Christmas
This was the 25th anniversary of “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. Something that has survived the test of time has to be great. In addition to being a classic, it also is a “horror” movie for kids. That itself in some sense is oxymoronic. But the combination of the holiday-ness and clay animation this movie appeals to everyone, at least it did to me. So what makes it special for me is certainly the clay animation aspect of it, every frame has to be changed by hand. Making it not only painful, time-consuming process but also making it look fresh even for today’s age where CGI has evolved so much. The clayiness doesn’t feel old and seems to be exciting as not many movies these days do that. There is an earthy charm to it which even the Avatar’s of today’s day doesn’t have. And certainly in addition to the great romantic story hidden within this great piece of art is going to be watched Halloween after Halloween for many decades to follow.
What do I stand for? Most nights I don’t know…
Morals, Ideals are words which are thrown around commonly now. After watching the movie, I thought about do I stand for, what is it so deeply that I believe that I can take a bullet for? I cannot find an answer for this, honesty, integrity and respect are things I hope to stand for but certainly, there have been times where my not so good judgment has fallen through the cracks. But is having very strong ideals equivalent to being stubborn? I feel there needs to be a balance, certainly one should stand by things tone believes in but one also has to recognize that their duty is above that and regardless of their belief they have to do what they have to do. And honestly, that’s what the movie showed, one can flex their beliefs, without giving them up, to accomplish their duty.
What’s God own Country?
Before watching the movie I thought this was going to be the protagonist struggle with their sexuality and religious belief, the title also alluded to that but throughout the movie, I failed to find such a correlation. In the end, the question of what’s “God’s own Country” lingered around? A way to look at is that it means heaven but what I took from it was more the “silence” in the scenes with the movie. The “silence” was, at least to me, when I soaked in all the emotions and the nature of Yorkshire. “Silence” is the place we are closest ourselves or one might say to God. The characters as well seem to be struggling with their own self, sexuality, and struggles of not disappointing the people around them. Thinking about all of these problems in our heads is where the silence comes in. This has been one of the most thought-provoking or “strong” movies I have seen.
“Hey Terminator, what’s the weather today?”
“Hey, Siri!”, “Ok, Google” and “Alexa, I am sad, play Despacito” These expressions are very common in today’s time. We have been treating these technological advancements as real human beings. We talk to them and as I saw during my Thanksgiving break, teach kids to be polite to them. Ex Machina takes this symbiosis of technology and humans to the next, a much gloomier level. In addition to that, the movie also raised questions on the interpretability of the algorithms we design, Ava did whatever to attain a certain goal, even deceiving David in doing so. This makes the question of how an algorithm does it what it does and why it does so a more important question.
