3 Pictures

This week at BMJ, I decided to surprise one of the students, a little boy named Abrin, with a disposable camera I had purchased from Walmart a little while back. I had been taking pictures on it for a couple of days, and we have created a nice friendship, so thought he could have some fun with it. When I told him I had a surprise for him, his whole face lit up. I handed him the camera, showed him how it worked, and told him he could take three photos. He was amazed. At first he looked through the dinky lens around the room, then said he wished he could have taken pictures of the outdoors. He then took one picture of me, turned the camera around and took a picture of me and him. He decided to save the last picture for the end of our precious hour. We had fun playing and talking together as usual.

At the end of the hour he decided he wanted to take his last picture. Again he requested a picture of him and me together. I promised to bring him the pictures next time I see him, or after I get them developed. This little boy could have taken pictures of anything, yet he documented me and our time together. I think the camera made his day, but his photo choices made mine.

  1. I just read your post and I cannot believe what a coincidence this is! I’m not sure if you remember me, but I walked into the room and sat down with the kids just before you took a picture with the little boy and left. I think we smiled at each other, but I don’t think either of us knew that we both came from the Rose Service Scholars program. I just wanted to say that you two looked absolutely adorable taking the picture together. Abrin looked so happy interacting with you. I think its wonderful that I’m able to connect some background and your personal thoughts to what I observed that day, so thank you for sharing!
