The Writing Process for Jobs

When applying for jobs, we can be intimidated by and shy away from opportunities that require a set level of experiences we may not have. However, this isn’t always the case because the way we portray ourselves in writing may be the differentiator that pushes our resumes through to the next step. For instance, I realized that most cover letters can come off as dry, and it’s important to tell your story. You can be very accomplished and have the qualifications, but if your story isn’t compelling, that could possibly work against you instead of in your favor. The mini-seminar was really helpful in teaching us how to be better writers when it comes to cover letters as well as personal statements/grant proposals, and it definitely emphasized the value of writing and opened me to new perspectives in my own professional job search.

  1. This is something I’ve definitely struggled with myself. It can be difficult to figure out where the line is between selling yourself to potential employers by highlighting your relevant experiences and over-exaggerating your accomplishments. I wish I could have attended this event, because it seems like it really addressed that issue in a productive, healthy way. Hopefully there’ll be another similar event soon!

  2. The professional seminar seemed very valuable, and I wish that I could have attended. You are correct in saying that people shy away from applying for certain jobs because of a lack of qualifications. I also sometimes feel that I am lacking in terms of experience and qualifications when compared to other applicants. But the cover letter serves as the platform for you to express yourself in writing and differentiate you. The resume can only reveal a small, professional aspect of who you are. Your story and interests must be showcased in the cover letter to be successful. As I look to apply to internships and full-time jobs in the future, I will practice writing my own cover letters and telling my own story.
