At the beginning of Ex Machina, I did not expect the storyline to follow anything other than the cliché — robot falls in love with boy, boy falls in love with robot. As the movie progressed, I was pleasantly surprised to witness the deviation from this cliché. More importantly, this movie was very thought provoking, raising questions of whether artificial intelligence can have a ‘consciousness’ and can fully immerse itself into the human world. The ending proved to me that humans will attach emotions to artificial intelligence and let such emotions cloud their judgement. Thus, it is clear that construing artificial intelligence in today’s society can backfire. If you’re into sci-fi movies, especially one with many unexpected twists, I recommend this movie!
