To me, “professional” is usually associated with “expensive” or “time-consuming”, which is why I rushed to sign up for the opportunity to take a free headshot. While I did walk away with a new headshot, I also took away some helpful tips on how to dress and present yourself professionally.
For many people, the first impression they will have of you is taken from how you dress, appear, and hold yourself. It’s become increasingly important to take care of your appearance, especially in the workplace. Having my first internship last summer, one of the first questions I had was “how should I dress?” I was told to come in business casual, and never in jeans, but these guidelines led to even more questions. What is business casual and why couldn’t I get a single clear answer on what it was? Even after the completion of my internship and (supposedly) wearing business casual everyday, I still never really understood what it was. Sabrina helped clear up some of my confusion by describing business casual as a style that is flexible and open to interpretation, depending on your own style and what pieces you may have in your wardrobe. She also had some recommendations on where she would find comfortable but work-appropriate shoes. I think it’ll take some time for me to develop my own sense of style and understand how to dress professionally, but I’ll definitely keep in the mind the tips I got today.
I always have the exact same problem! Business casual is such an odd line to walk, especially with the question of not going too casual with jeans, but also not going too business with slacks. Thanks for sharing the tips you got from Sabrina – I’ll definitely try to take that advice!
I like this helpful description of business casual. I’ve know I’ve spent far too long agonizing over different outfits, trying to figure out what fits the definition best.
I would have loved to attend this talk! As someone who has multiple jobs on campus that require different dress, it is hard to gauge what is or is not business casual/ professional/ casual. Hopefully there will be another talk like this coming up soon
