Oh My Gourd

As the semester progressed I had become so overwhelmingly invested in completing my work on time, that I completely forgot to participate in the activities that bring me joy. I remember reading religiously every night before falling asleep; however, now I usually fall asleep with my Organic Chemistry textbook still open on my bed. I had brought so many books from home and my camera as well, but I am now realizing that both those things have remained largely untouched over the course of the semester. This activity was not only one of my favorite Rose Scholars events but also was such an amazing outlet to destress, as we created stunning nightlights from gourds. This outlet has allowed my creative ability to run free and that was something I had deprived my self of, as I became overwhelmed with the amount of work I was trying to keep up with.

  1. Thank you for posting this wonderful feedback picture here! As someone who really wanted to go to the event but was turned down by a prelim taking place at the same time, I also got great joy seeing what other people have created from the posts.

  2. This photo is beautiful!! I really agree with the above comment. It was something I wish I could have been to, but this post gave a great sense of the event to those of us who didn’t go

  3. I loved this event too. We are always so caught up in what we feel we have to do that sometimes we forget to take a break and do what we want to do or even need to do.

  4. I told relate to reading all the time as a kid and now just reading because it was assigned. I went to this event too and I enjoyed being able to use my creative side, which I don’t really get to do when I’m spending most of my days finishing problem sets and writing papers.
Also, your light looks so good! I like how the light makes a sun shape in the background!

  5. This is so cool! I really wanted to go to this event but I unfortunately had a prelim on the same day. I can honestly relate too hard to getting caught up in too much work and falling asleep while reading textbooks. I’m so glad you gave yourself a break and made such a pretty gourd!

  6. I was unable to attend this event because I was busy that day. I really wanted to go though! Your gourd is really pretty. This was probably a really good stress-reliever.
