I have always wondered what is good and evil. All of us have an individual answer to this question, but there isn’t a clear objective and universal definition of good and evil. We live in a world where there are division and conflict all fueled by the differences of the individual perspectives of what is good and evil. A historic example is the Holocaust during the second world war. This example is portrayed in the highly accredited film “The Pianist” starring Adrien Brody. The movie is about polish pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman and his family during the Nazi invasion of Warsaw and the events following. The film portrays the cruel acts performed by the Nazis on the Jewish population. Clearly making them the bad guys in the movie. However, everything changes when Szpilman is hiding from the Nazis but it discovered by Wermach officer Wilm Hosenfeld. At this point, I was certain that Szpilman was a dead man. But, his life was spared by the German officer who instead provided him with food, shelter, protection, and clothing. This act gave us a new perspective of the Nazi’s who initially we thought of horrible. It shows that many of its members did not agree with the cruel acts and were simply following orders. It shows that the world is not black and white, but instead a shade of grey.
