“Keep quiet.” His fingers hover over the piano in desperation barely licking the keys. Silence screams in the barren room. He is pale and his eyes are somber.

And he plays.

Ghosts. His fingers float across still piano keys, conjuring broken memories.

Music drowns his piano and feeds his starving mind. Electricity sparks in his once hollow eyes. He weaves torn romances back together across his divine piano keys.

Sound numbs his scars and sews back to the sky fallen diamonds, cracked stars.

The music melts, and ghosts drift. Time spins like a supernatural top. For one moment like frozen water the ghostly piano had let it stop.

In the drama, The Pianist, the Jewish protagonist experiences the horrors of the holocaust. The movie is graphic, gripping, and painful to watch. The director powerfully communicates the story to viewers, and the movie reveals the inhumane and horrible nature of the holocaust. Out of all the gory and gut-wrenching scenes in this drama, this scene strikes me. The analogy between the piano and the protagonist’s suffering plays a key role throughout the movie. The protagonist is a pianist, and throughout the movie he loses his family and suffers several other painful events. I am inspired by how the director ties the piano to his emotions. This motif drives the movie and provides a source of refuge for the protagonist in the chaos of the world around him.

I would like to use music and effective symbolism in my writing in the future. I would like to look further into other work by this director. This event served as an informative and inspirational experience. While the movie was difficult to watch, I recognize its importance and the effectiveness of the film.
