Going on a trip to try something new is always a fun time. Today I went to a nearby ice rink with fellow West Campus peers and Cornell students to try out the Olympic sport Curling. Curling is a rather unknown sport that people may have seen in brief clips or memes, but I can assure you that it is much harder than the athletes make it look.
Curling is a team sport, requiring 4 members on each team working together to get the “stone” into the “house.” Today, we got to experience all the roles, alternating between being the shot-caller, the shooter, and the sweeper providing a nice hands-on opportunity that is hard to come by. Spending three hours on the ice with experienced curlers to teach us was definitely a fun time and educational, I definitely have much more respect for those who compete in curling after seeing first-hand how difficult it is to place the stone where to want and control the strength involved.
That sounds like a lot of fun! Out of the positions you got to try, which was your favorite? Do you think you will watch curling in the Olympics in the future now that you’ve had the opportunity to try it?
I wish I went to this event haha; I have never quite understood curling, but it sounds really fun to try. And I love ice skating, so it would have been a great way to destress
