Cornell Club of Maryland: Wine and Wisdom at Boordy Vineyards

On Sunday, October 29, the rain ended just in time for what turned out to be a beautiful autumn Sunday in Hydes, Maryland. With over twenty members in attendance, the Cornell Club of Maryland enjoyed two guest speakers, a tour, and wine flights at Boordy Vineyards. Jon Chapman ‘83, former Stewardship Program Manager of the Maryland Environmental Trust, spoke about land preservation, and Rob Deford, president of Boordy Vineyards, shared the history of the property and led a fascinating tour of the barrel room and the historic barn.

Architects and fellow alumni Pamela Warfield ‘84 and Henry Warfield ‘81, also in attendance, designed the new (2004) winery building to blend with the aesthetic of the 197-year-old barn that houses the historic wine storage facilities and barrel room. Our group was able to participate in an engaging conversation about the state of Maryland’s land preservation efforts and the vineyard’s vernacular architecture of the barns and buildings. Many thanks to CCMD ad hoc advisory board member Will Andersen ‘93 for serving as point for the event and to Jenn Taylor ‘99/‘00, president of CCMD, for coordinating with Boordy’s Vineyard
