I am interested in the large-scale dynamics of the stratosphere and its interactions with the tropospheric circulation. Much of my work focuses on the dynamics of the Arctic polar vortex including sudden stratospheric warmings and their impacts on the North Atlantic jet, but I also work on tropical upwelling and the quasi-biennial oscillation in the lower stratosphere.
These stratospheric phenomena are increasingly recognized as important sources of skill for sub-seasonal to seasonal forecasts.
