Week 8 (7/18/22 – 7/22/22): Starting the Harvest

Garlic HarvestWe have resolved quite a few of the pest issues from last week by continuing to apply Diatomaceous Earth and Neem Oil. We expect to get traps soon to deal with the cucumber beetles. The program participants are learning quickly, and are able to identify plants much better than when they started. In addition, it is really exciting and motivating for the team to see plants start to produce fruits. I always think that it is so cool to see people watch a flower become a vegetable for the first time! We cleaned up the garlic we had been drying for the past Hurakan Squashfew weeks, and they look absolutely beautiful. Cleaning up the dried garlic plants to look like store-bought garlic bulbsĀ  seemed to be a group favorite. The squash and eggplants started growing this week, and we were able to harvest our first Hurakan Squash! Looking forward to continuing to show this team how to harvest the large variety of plants we have growing.
