Week 7 (7/11/22 – 7/15/22): Pest Management

GROWS team with a funderThis week was quite tiring but fun for me. We welcomed a new GROWS team member because one of our members moved on from the program. This means that this weak I was managing 7 people total, 5 GROWS members and 2 summer employees from Rochester Works. With so many hands working, we got a ton done! Some of the things we did this week was set up the rain barrel, plant some new okra plants, reseed some beets, do some landscaping around the property, and set up a new fence for the Master Gardeners. In addition to this, we’ve had to managing pests that are eating our plants. We’ve set out plates with beer in them to catch slugs, and started spraying neem oil to kill aphids that are on our turnips, peppers, and eggplants. Next week we will start using diatomaceous earth to prevent beetles from eating the squash plants, and using sticky traps to kill cucumber beetles, both of which I noticed this week. I was very happy this week with the initiative that a lot of our GROWS employees have been taking and the teamwork they’ve been showing. Looking forward to watching us grow as a team!
