Summer internships in plant breeding for sustainability

Spend the summer outside in Ithaca and learn about sustainable agriculture and plant breeding research! The Moore Lab is currently recruiting students for a paid summer internship program. We conduct research on plant breeding for sustainable cropping systems with a focus on cover crops, forages, hemp, and dry beans. As a student intern, you will assist with the establishment and maintenance of experiments in the field and greenhouse, including activities such as planting, weeding, mowing, electric fence upkeep, and harvesting and cleaning seed from breeding populations. Interns will also participate in data collection for all experiments, including hand sampling biomass for yield estimates, weighing biomass collected from mechanized harvesting equipment, and taking visual ratings, counts and measurements. You will learn plant breeding research skills and have the option to participate in educational activities such as field trips, a current topics in sustainability discussion group, and to attend research field days. There will also be an option to lead an independent research project or media presentation on a special interest topic in sustainability.

Job requirements include an interest in working outdoors, a safety mindset, attention to detail, and the ability to get to work location at 126 Medicago Drive (walk, bike, or take bus to Love Lab near the Vet School). Students who want to learn more about sustainable agriculture and enjoy working as part of a team will be a good fit for this position! Work schedule is 8:30-4:30 Monday –Thursday, 8:30-3:30 Friday. Preference will be given to students able to start work around the last week of May and work into August.
