Microbial Safety of Infant Feeding Lab

Supporting Hygienic Infant Feeding Through Research & Practice

Welcome

Smiling BabyThe Microbial Safety of Infant Feeding Research (MicroSIF) lab aims to translate scientific knowledge into practical strategies to mitigate the risk of invasive infections associated with infant feeding.

VISION

At MicroSIF, we envision a future where proactive measures can mitigate the risk of invasive infections associated with infant feeding, particularly in the earliest days of life. We strive to make a positive impact on infant health and family well-being, ultimately contributing to a healthier, safer future for generations to come.

Mission & Goals

  • Advance scientific understanding of microbial risks associated with infant food or feeding practices.
  • Develop and validate reliable methods for preventing microbial contamination in expressed breastmilk, formula, or fortifiers.
  • Empower parents and caregivers with evidence-based guidance for minimizing the risk of microbial contamination and growth in breastmilk, formula, or fortifiers.
  • Support the development of safe infant feeding products and practices.
  • Assist healthcare professionals in delivering effective messaging around hygienic practices for infant feeding.
  • Advocate for policies and regulations that prioritize infant safety and family well-being.

VALUES

Collaboration: We actively engage diverse stakeholders including caregivers, healthcare providers, industry, and nonprofits, to reduce illnesses linked to infant feeding.

Innovation: We use state-of-the art methods, technologies, and collaborations to translate groundbreaking research into practical solutions for promoting safe, hygienic infant feeding practices and products.

Education & Outreach:  We believe in advancing the lives and safety of caregivers and infants through concisely communicating our research findings via publicly accessible channels including our blog and social media.

Transparency: We are committed to making our research data and methods readily accessible and understandable to all interested parties.

MicroSIF Lab is directed by Dr. Abigail Snyder. It is housed with the Department of Food Science within Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.  Our work also aligns with Cornell’s Women’s Health Research and Innovation.  Learn more about our projects:
