Inversion Space Recruiting Visit

Inversion Space is a start-up based in Torrance, CA, building low-cost, high cadence, capsules to return cargo to Earth. We received $10m+ in seed funding at the end of 2021 and are currently working on our demonstration capsule, Ray, as well as our next-generation vehicle, Arc.

Inversion was founded in 2021 with the mission to build the first affordable, high cadence return capability for the commercial and defense space industries. With launching to space becoming cheap and frequent, comparable options for return must become available to allow for a robust economy in space. We believe in a future where returning from space is as common as launching to space. Inversion is building reentry vehicles faster and cheaper than ever before through a focus on simplicity.

We are looking for students interested in avionics, recovery, controls, structures, mechanisms, propulsion and GNC to help us build re-entry space capsules! You will be working across multiple engineering teams & disciplines to apply your knowledge and skills to real aerospace problems. If you’ve demonstrated a commitment to academic success and want to apply that fundamental knowledge to real-space problems, then Inversion is looking for you.

If you’d like to learn more and chat with our team, we will be holding an info session followed by a meet and greet on Monday, October 23rd from 2 to 3pm in Upson 116.

Looking forward to seeing you next week!

SP24 – TA and Grader Interest Form

If you’d like to be considered for a Teaching Assistant or Grader position, please fill out this Google form as soon as possible: https://forms.gle/6NcKGWhKr7eMLzEL6

Mechanical Engineering majors may use their work as a TA to count for credit, which can fulfill an Advisor Approved elective requirement (contingent on advisor approval). TAs and graders average no more than 10-12 hours of work per week (fluctuations in the workload will occur throughout the semester, but should not average more than that). Students who receive offers for TA positions should plan on being asked to offer office hours, lead discussion or lab sections, and possibly assist with grading. Additional specific or alternate TA tasks are decided by the instructor. TAs should plan to be available at least a week before the start of the semester through the grading of final exams.

Students who receive offers for grading positions will only be required to grade; no other TA tasks are required.

All first time TA’s and graders are required to attend a half-day training in mid-February offered by Engineering Learning Initiatives.

Grader positions are offered at a paid hourly rate. TA positions must be taken for credit if it is your first time TAing for MAE, otherwise they can be for credit or at a paid hourly rate.

Note: There is a change in the process of hiring paid TAs/Graders. The first step is to fill out the Google form using the link above with the information requested in it. The second step is that I will look through the interest form and send out offers. If you are going to be a paid, the third step will be to apply through a Workday link for the student job (this link will be in the offer email). This is new this year, so please be patient as we navigate the new Workday student employment site. If you TA for credit, I will send out a permission pin to enroll in MAE 4980 during the Add/Drop Period. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Courses being offered in the spring that may need TA/Grader support:

ENGRD 2020 – Statics and Mechanics of Solids

MAE 2030 – Dynamics

MAE 2250 – Mechanical Synthesis

MAE 3240 – Heat Transfer

MAE 3780/3783 – Mechatronics

MAE 4070/5070 – Dynamics of Flight Vehicles

MAE 4220/4221/5220 – Introduction to Internet of Things — Technology and Engagement

MAE 4510/5510 – Aerospace Propulsion

MAE 4770/5770 – Engineering Vibrations
