Madison County Grower Email for 10.12.2023

(This is a copy of this week’s specialty crop grower email… shoot Maryellen an email if you want to get on the mailing list or have access to any of the shared articles: ms3573@cornell.edu!)

I hope this turn to fall feeling weather finds you and your farms doing well! Up in Fenner it’s close to being the latest we’ve had a first frost (unless we catch one tonight). This has been helpful for getting some later-planted crops to full maturity, but less useful for sweetening up those crops where you want to see a little frost before going into storage.

I thought that all our articles were done for the season last month, so it was a happy bonus to get some well-timed fall reading to share this week:

  1. Winterizing Strawberries, by Laura McDermott, CCE Eastern NY Commercial Horticulture Program
  2. Reminders and Tips for Harvesting Sweet and Irish Potatoes for Storage, by Chuck Bornt, Cornell Cooperative Extension Eastern NY Commercial Horticulture Program (you can read this on the ENY Commercial Horticulture Program blog at: https://blogs.cornell.edu/enychp/vegetables/veg-news-enychp-weekly-update-10-05-2023/)
  3. Detecting Carrot Root Decay at Harvest (complete with lots of slimy carrot photos), by Julie Kikkert, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Cornell Vegetable Program (you can read this on the ENY Commercial Horticulture Program blog at: https://blogs.cornell.edu/enychp/vegetables/veg-news-enychp-weekly-update-10-05-2023/)
  4. Thoughts on Recent Developments in Weed Control Technology, by Dr. Lynn Sosnoskie, Cornell University (including some photos of cool new technology, some of which you can find on Dr. Sosnoskie’s Specialty Crop Weed Science Instagram)

They are all posted down below this email (if you are a local grower who wants to get on our specialty crop email list, please reach out to ccemadison.org!)

Before I say happy fall in this closing email of the main growing season, I wanted to share a few upcoming events (you can more via our event page (https://ccemadison.org/events) or by signing up for our monthly “CUD” e-newsletter:

Please have a great rest of October and reach out anytime. Happy harvesting!
