Rust of bean

This disease has been seen rarely on Long Island.  From 1988 – 2022 it was seen once in a community garden.

The diagnostic symptom of rust diseases is pustules that erupt to release wind-dispersed orange spores.

There are many resistant varieties.

Images below taken in 1982 show symptoms on upper and lower leaf surfaces, and impact of rust on the crop.
