Cornell University

Image: Leila Wilmers profileI am a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Sociology at Cornell University, now looking for a faculty position to begin in Fall 2024. My research concerns nationalism in the contemporary world, and particularly experiences of nationhood and the processes and conditions of bottom-up engagement with nationalist ideology and politics. Empirically, I focus primarily on the post-Soviet region. My work highlights the interaction of ideology and everyday life in the ongoing resonance of nationalism, and the role of place and local politics in the ways nationhood is experienced and nationalism takes shape.

I am currently working on a book exposing the tensions integral to nationhood that keep nationalist ideology alive, rather than weakening it. The book began with fieldwork I conducted in the Russian cities of Ekaterinburg and Kazan in 2017-18 for my PhD dissertation. I have also written on memory of genocide and war in relation to Armenian diasporic identity, and on visions of the nation after Brexit among young people in Britain. My research has been published in peer-reviewed articles in the journals Ethnic and Racial Studies, Ethnicities, Nationalities Papers, Europe-Asia Studies (forthcoming).
