Week 1

My first week began with a tour of the Long Island Horticultural Research and Extension Center (LIHREC) and completing the Worker Protection Standard training. On my first day, I set up the last of 5 mycorrhizal trials, this being the only trial at LIHREC. Selected panels in two rows of the research vineyard got the mycorrhizae sprinkled around the base of the grapevines, and panels in two other rows got mycorrhizae spread in trenches dug near the roots of the grapevines. This week, I also set up and put pheromone lures into 60 traps for 3 types of grapevine pests that are known to exist in other parts of the country. I went to 6 vineyards on the North Fork to set up these traps. They will be checked in two weeks to see if any of these insects have made their way to eastern Long Island yet. Additionally, I helped set traps for spotted lantern flies which are known to exist on Long Island, but have not yet been found on Long Island vineyards. Another project I helped with this week was measuring the length and width of grapevine shoots in a couple of vineyards that had their mycorrhizae trials established in May.
