How cloud computing is changing network monitoring

This article speaks about cloud computing compared to traditional computing. It compares the networking we are all used to where we have our servers and a fixed number of assets that make up the network. The things in the traditional network are running almost all the time and the network itself does not change much. When we compare this to cloud computing, there is much more flexibility with the network. A network in a cloud computing system can easily scale and change over time because resources are no longer fixed. The resources a company needs can be requested on-demand and this frees up time and money to experiment with different types of network architectures.

This connects to the topics of networks and graph theory because traditionally, people knew what resources they had and that completed the network. If we treat each asset as a node and link them to one another, weights can represent the cost needed to run a particular part of the architecture. This could be drawn out and would be fixed until further development is made with the architecture by means of adding more servers. Now with cloud computing and assets available on-demand, the networks can be changed with ease and different types of networks can be compared. If we go to the analogy that assets are nodes and the edges carry the cost of using an asset, a company can optimize its infrastructure to deliver the best performance while still maintaining a minimum cost.
