Google Pixel Adoption Rate at Nearly 300% Growth
In the article Google Pixel Adoption Rate at Nearly 300% Growth, author Jesse Bouman discusses why mobile marketers should pay attention to Google Pixel’s seemingly high adoption rate. The Google Pixel was released in October as the first phone by Google after weeks of viral marketing and campaigning. Claiming to have the highest rated smartphone camera, long lasting battery life, and unlimited media storage, the Google Pixel has been doing extremely well. Bowman attributes the 300% adoption rate with Pixel’s partnership with Verizon, allowing for better launch logistics and marketing. Although this adoption rate is very high, it is unsure if the Pixel can be seen “as the flagship Android device” that Samsung phones currently hold. However, if the Pixel has more market shares in the mobile market, Bouman warns other big mobile producers (Apple and Samsung) about potentially changing their marketing strategies.
This relates to what we have been learning in class about adoption rates and viral marketing. New technology is spreading via adoption in social networks. As we learned in class, to increase the cascade of usage of new technology, companies reduce the cost of their products, improve their products, and use advertisements to create a belief that people will use the product. This is evident in Google Pixel’s marketing campaign. Before Pixel’s launch in October, I frequently saw advertisements on Youtube (since Google bought Youtube) and Google even poked fun on how Apple’s new iPhone 7 lacks a headphone jack. Google Pixel constantly boasted about their unlimited HD photo and video storage (as opposed to limited storage on Apple devices), the Google assistant (as opposed to Siri), and of course, a headphone jack. Lastly, I believe the reason behind such a high adoption rate is because billions of people use Google products daily already, and the idea of having the first Google phone ever sounds very exciting to many.
