New 18th-19th Century American Digital Resources

Thanks to the generosity of a new gift to the Library, we have been able to purchase digitized versions of two 18th century newspaper collections: The Virginia Gazette from 1736–1780, and a collection of newspapers from South Carolina from 1732 to 1780.  The newspapers are part of the “Accessible Archives” collection to which the Library already has access.

Purchase of the two collections is being made over a period of four years.  During that time, CUL will also have subscriber access to all of the Accessible Archives databases.  Some of the resources that will be accessible include four collections of books relating to the Civil War (The Soldiers’ Perspective; The Generals’ Perspective; A Midwestern Perspective, and Iowa’s Perspective), and a collection of American county histories from New England and Mid-Atlantic states published up to 1900.

Unlike digitized resources that rely on digital images and OCR’ed text to provide access, the Accessible Archives collections are transcribed and encoded by humans.  The result are resources of surprising accuracy.

You can access all of the Accessible Archives databases by searching for “Accessible Archives” in the catalog or by following this link.
