Congressional Hearings backfile available

Lynn Thitchner, the selector for Government resources, informs us that CUL has recently acquired the complete backfile of US Congressional Hearings, part of the “Congressional Publications” database now owned by Proquest.  Official hearings, which are printed by the Government Printing Office, usually include:

  • Written and oral statements of witnesses
  • Transcripts of the verbal question-and-answer sessions between the committee and witnesses
  • Reports, exhibits and other materials submitted for the record by witnesses
  • Correspondence and other materials submitted by interested parties

You can check out the nice LibGuide pathfinder created by Proquest:  http://proquest.libguides.com/quick_start_hearings

To try your own search,

  • Go to Congressional Publications: http://resolver.library.cornell.edu/misc/aqh6127
  • Click on Advanced Search.
  • Clear all selections, and check Hearings, 1824 – present
  • Don’t forget to change the date default at the bottom of the search page (the default is 2 years)

Note: The decision to publish hearings rests solely on the individual committees. Most hearings are published from six months to a year after the hearing, but some hearings may be published after a year or two. Transcripts of hearings that are not published are deposited at the National Archives.
