Public Health Workforce Development and Public Health Systems Strengthening

Public Health Workforce Development and Public Health Systems Strengthening, including design and delivery of major capacity-building initiatives, supporting public health decision-making and supporting the development of inter-sectoral public health teams. 

    • With support from CDC’s National Center for State, Tribal, Local, and Territorial Public Health Infrastructure and Workforce, we’re using implementation science methods to elucidate, document, and disseminate promising practices to strengthen rural public health systems. 
    • In partnership with the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities, we are using implementation science to pilot the efficacy of the Public Health Essentials certificate in equipping Cooperative Extension staff to become Certified Public Health practitioners and evaluating the outcomes and public health impacts of an inter-sectoral workforce community-based workforce.  Learn more here: Public Health Essentials + Impacts
    • In partnership with New York State’s Department of Health and HRI, we’ve deployed a broad-reaching capacity-building intervention to develop public health strategic skills and are using prospective evaluation processes to elucidate workforce- and health-related outcomes and impacts.     • With support from USDA RHSE, we’re using implementation science methods to understand barriers and facilitators to public health workforce development and how expanded workforce capacities translate into public health actions, focus, reach, and community health outcomes. Year 1 + Year 2
    • Impacts of Public Health Essentials work profiled in Sullivan County Democrat (2023) and again in Sullivan County Democrat (2023)
    • In partnership with the New York State Department of Child and Family Services we’re using implementation science methods to evaluate the benefits of using the Public Health Essentials intervention with Public Health AmeriCorps members in New York State. About
    • With support from the Cornell Center for Health Equity, we’re working with Tompkins County Whole Health to pilot novel methods to elucidate structural and environmental barriers key populations face in accessing disease prevention services. Announcement
    • In partnership with the National Network of Public Health Institutes, we evaluated the processes being used for a national public health workforce capacity-building initiative. We provided evidence-based recommendations for next steps and actions to increase impacts.
    • With support from the USDA Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program and in partnership with the Rural Health Network, we’re researching the reach and benefits of the Food as Medicine program across south-central New York. Summary
