In week #1 of Field Biology, I found this Checkered-fringe Prominent (Schizura ipomoeaea) caterpillar feeding on an Ash-leaved Maple (Acer negundo). This caterpillar often feeds on Ash-leaved Maple and is an outstanding leaf mimic. When feeding at the edge of the leaf, the caterpillar’s brown coloration mimics the browning edge of a late-season leaf (makes them hard to find in a year like this!). – Paul Rodewald
