Our Partner: Survived & Punished
Survived & Punished is a grassroots prison abolitionist movement devoted to freeing criminalized survivors of domestic and sexual violence. They are not only bringing attention to the culture of violence responsible for survivors’ criminalization in the first place, but working to eliminate it. Survived & Punished New York is one chapter of this incredible movement, and they are our community partner for this semester.

Our Team
Our Cause
Survived & Punished New York is specifically focused on criminalized survivors of gender-based violence who are imprisoned in New York. A central part of their campaign targets Governor Cuomo, who is up for re-election in 2022. Governor Cuomo has the ability to grant clemency for criminalized individuals.
Governor Cuomo is notorious for granting very few applications for clemency, denying thousands of applications since he assumed the governorship in 2011. Survived & Punished New York is specifically addressing Governor Cuomo by creating a social media campaign that will launch around the time of Government Cuomo’s re-election. Survived & Punished New York will also work with other political organizations that will agree to endorse Governor Cuomo in exchange for mass clemencies in the state of New York.
Our goals
To respect survivor’s voices and portray them in both in a factual but also emotionally compelling way.
To protect survivors and their dignity, taking care not to resort to trauma-porn.
To break down and convey complicated
information, especially that of duty to our audience.

Why we are different
Our value add is winnowed storytelling. We are winnowers in that we take the resources and stories shared by our partners and sift through the knowledge to create media that is accessible to the general public. We remove trauma porn and technical terms and share the stories’ of survivors to have a clear impact and reach a set goal.
