Free!! Home & Community Food Scrap Composting Training

Saturday, May 18 from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Village Hall, Third Floor, Tivoli, NY

Followed by an optional discussion/Q&A about Tivoli’s Community Compost

Site (12-1:00 pm), & site development/compost tumbler assembling (1-3:00 pm)

Description:

Home and community composting offer a local option for recycling food scraps and garden/yard materials, putting these valuable resources to good use, and keeping them out of landfills. You can help build healthy soils, right where you live!  Small-scale compost systems can be established at homes, in neighborhoods, at community gardens, farms, or schools, churches, senior centers, libraries, or other locations. This training is designed to help people and communities determine the composting system that will best meet their goals for collecting and composting food scraps. Participants will gain the knowledge to: choose the best system for their site; composting basics; safely collect and manage food scraps; accumulate and store carbon sources; site management; communicate “work flow” with family or fellow composters; and more.

Training Overview:

  • Food scrap composting 101 for backyard & community scale sites
  • Compost system options, siting, set up, maintenance
  • Feedstock collection: sourcing, quality

During lunch, we will share in discussion and Q&A about Tivoli’s Community Composting Site. All are welcome to learn about the new site. Following lunch, we will move to the Tivoli Community Gardens to assemble a Jora Compost tumbler, designed specifically for composting food scraps. We’ll also do some site clean-up around the compost area. And, discuss next steps for the Community Compost Site.

The training is free and open to the public. For more information, contact: Athena Lee Bradley, athena@nerc.org or 802-490-6825.

Refreshments will be provided; please bring a brown bag lunch (if you will be joining us for lunch), water bottle, & drink mug.
