Clinical Curriculum Redesign Framework
Program Goals
The competency framework, developed by CUCVM faculty, articulates the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for successful day-one practice. This framework serves as the foundation upon which clinical curriculum redesign decisions are being made. The goal is to scaffold the clinical learning experiences over time, helping all students attain competency across all nine domains by graduation.
Managing Change
For planning purposes, the curriculum is divided into three stages:
- Stage 1 Pre-Clinical
- Stage 2 Clinical Foundations
- Stage 3 Clinical Rotations
Redesign efforts focus primarily on stages 2 and 3, corresponding to Foundation Courses V, VI, and VII in the current curriculum.
Faculty serving on the Stage 2 Design Team and Stage 3 Design Team are leading the curriculum redesign efforts. These teams are making short-term improvements while examining opportunities for more comprehensive long-term changes. Focus Teams help implement small-scale projects to test new teaching methods. Feedback and outcomes data help to validate the efficacy and feasibility of new ideas and pressure points to be resolved before attempting large-scale implementation. The balance between incremental and transformative changes is a key component of our redesign strategy.
