Global Climate Finance and Risks

Cornell-OFR Conference on Climate-related Risks and Financial Stability – October 25, 2024

Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability, the SC Johnson College of Business, and the Office of Financial Research co-hosted a virtual conference
Global Climate Finance and Risks
on October 25, 2024.

The intersection of climate change and financial risk is an area of increasing concern. As the impacts of climate change become more evident, there is growing interest in understanding how climate mitigation finance at scale can help reduce the potential systemic risks posed by both physical and transition-related climate threats to the financial system. These issues present challenges for policymakers, regulators, and financial practitioners.

Conference co-chairs Dean Andrew Karolyi (Cornell SC Johnson College of Business), Dr. Dasol Kim (Office of Financial Research), and Dr. Alissa M. Kleinnijenhuis (Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, Imperial College London) joined with Cornell Atkinson’s Alan Martinez, Lead for Climate and Nature Finance, to provide a platform for actionable insights into policies and strategies for advancing global climate finance.

The conference featured keynotes, research presentations, and roundtable discussions from some of the most knowledgeable leaders in climate science, policy, and finance, including US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Canadian economist Mark Carney, and Swedish climate scientist Johan Rockstrom. Discussion topics spanned the science of climate risk assessment and economic measurement, the integration of policy and taxation, and the roles of governments, investors, macroprudential regulators, and development institutions in scaling climate finance.
