24 Hours in Urbino

By Joseph Reigle

Here is my recap of the second destination on our field trip: Urbino!

February, 13 Thursday: Urbino

9 a.m. Palazzo Ducale We began our tour of Urbino with the Palazzo Ducale. The courtyard of the Ducale palace is a quintessential example of Urbino Renaissance design. Inside, the palace contains the National Gallery of the Marche, where we gazed at famous Renaissance artworks such as The Ideal City, and The Flagellation.

11:30 a.m. University Buildings by Giancarlo De Carlo After the museum, we began our pilgrimage to witness the university buildings designed by Italian architect Giancarlo De Carlo. De Carlo creatively repurposed historical buildings as contemporary lecture halls and libraries.

3:30 p.m. University Buildings by Giancarlo De Carlo We enjoyed a leisurely lunch break then regrouped to hike up the Urbino hills toward the innovative dormitories designed by Giancarlo De Carlo. The mountains offered beautiful vistas of the college town and its surrounding landscape. Once we arrived at the dorms, architects and planners were busy with their cameras and sketchbooks, capturing De Carlo’s architectural achievement.
