Graduate school slump?

A colleague of mine recently issued a “Top 10 list” that I thought might be worthwhile to adapt for a wider audience.

Top Ten Ways That Students Know That They Might Need to Work Harder

1. When you present at group meeting, your advisor looks like s/he is trying to commit suicide with a pen.

2. You believe that Fall and Spring breaks, as well as Labor Day, are really holidays for graduate students.

3. The last time you stayed in the lab past 5 pm was during your rotation.

4. The last time you spent both Saturday and Sunday in the lab was during your rotation.

5. You start group meeting by saying you do not have much to say (show).

6. You have developed an uncontrollable urge to spend time on a hobby (or another form of procrastination).

7. When you talk to your advisor, s/he says “Remind me what you are trying to do ………. ”

8. The last time you talked to your advisor about your work in depth was greater than 6 months ago.

9. The undergrads in the lab are in more that you are.

10. You attempt to rattle off a number of experiments the day before group meeting.
