Electronic version of the Biochemical Pathways Chart

The Biochemical Pathways chart is a large poster drawn up by Gerhard Michal of the Boehringer Mannheim company that gives a cross-section of general metabolism in various species and organs. It’s a classic poster that adorns the walls wherever biochemists are found.

The two charts, Biochemical Pathways, and Cellular and Molecular Processes, are daunting in their majesty and beauty.

These charts are an acknowledged tour de force of information visualization. However, it was not straightforward to use these charts as a reference source because of their large size (52″ width). Now a digitized version of the charts is available courtesy of the ExPASy Proteomics Server, click here. Extracting detailed information is easy as the charts can be searched by keywords, or can be browsed by clicking. Legends are supplied, and enzyme names are hyperlinked to their corresponding entry in the ENZYME Data bank.

A wonderful resource and a terrific way to update a classic for a new generation.
