Week 3: Ag. Stravaganza and Sample Collection

This week we finished preparing for our CCE Ag. Stravaganza presentation.  This event is for 4th graders in Cortland County to educate them on agriculture.  Molly and I presented the cycle of field crops to the kids and were able to touch on the main crops that are grown around the area.  As many of us know, most of society is fairly removed from agriculture and this was a great opportunity for us educate them on where their food comes from!  Pictured below is myself and the station that we presented on.

Also this week, I was able to finish processing soil samples that we took from last week.  After the soil samples were taken, they are put into an oven for several days to dry out completely.  Once the samples are dry, they are ground down, sifted, and put into sample cups to be analyzed for their composition.  I will update on the results in the coming weeks.

Later in the week, I traveled to Western New York with some of the NMSP team to collect soil samples, bio-mass, and populations in a tillage strip trial.  This trial is to understand how different cover crop tillage practices impact the growing crop.  I am hoping to visit this farm again sometime this summer to observe the later growth stages.
