Week 1: Introduction and Start of Internship

My name is Will Salamone, I am a senior in Animal Science graduating in December from Cornell University.  I am from Livingston County, NY and began working within the dairy industry in High School.  This summer I am an Intern working on the Dairy Sustainability project with both the Nutrient Management Spear Program and Cornell Cooperative Extension.  I will be focusing on individual nutrient management field balances and imported nutrients from by-product feeds.

Since my start, I have had extensive exposure to several of the projects that the team has been working on and have had the opportunity to dive in myself.  Over the past two weeks, myself, and Molly Mueller (another NMSP intern) have spent time getting familiar with the Dairy Sustainability projects and with CCE.  While working with Janice Degni of CCE, we have been able to experience agriculture within the South-Central region of NY by soil sampling, identifying weeds, collecting Seed Corn Maggot traps, searching for Cereal Leaf Beetles (not successful, but that is what we want), and touring farms in the area.  In addition to this, we have been able to join several project meetings and a Small Grains Field Day in Seneca Falls.  I am looking forward to the rest of the summer to gain further knowledge and experience in these areas with the team!
