Week 3: June 21st to June 24th

I can’t believe there is only one week left until we meet the CHAT teens! The week flew by as we were busy preparing a schedule, creating material lists, and organizing handouts to print for the teen training week the first week of July. One task I took on was coordinating the printing of new Scanned Food Package cards and some lesson posters because the Nutrition Facts label has been updated since the last time these materials were printed. It is interesting to see how many aspects have changed, from the previous labels reporting “Calories from Fat” alongside total calories and the new labels separating “Added Sugars” into its own row and percent Daily Value. I think it is important that the students see a consistent and current form of the Nutrition Facts Panel so that they know how to use it; many of them are not too young to be curious about these things and can learn to read and interpret the information contained on the back of the package as long as they receive useful guidance from the CHFFF educators.

An example of a current CHFFF lesson poster reflecting the most recent changes to the Nutrition Facts Panel; areas such as Calories are enlarged, added sugar is included, and there is no longer a "calories from fat" section compared to the old Nutrition Facts Panel.

We also visited PAL Polo Grounds, the second site where the CHFFF lessons will be held. It was really cool to see another site and get a better understanding of what the program implementation will look like. Most exciting was how enthusiastically the PAL supervisor we met with spoke about CHFFF; she said the students always looked forward to the lessons and were generally well-behaved and engaged. She also spoke very highly about the teens that served as CHAT facilitators, which made me even more eager to meet this year’s teens after next week!
